Sustainability performance platform

Australia aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, driving nationwide efforts in emission reduction and sustainable development. Many public and private sector organisations have been implementing various sustainability projects and achieving significant results. To monitor progress and emphasise the importance of this work and engage with the public, some organisations have made related data available to their stakeholders on their Internal and / or Open Data Portal.

The Challenges of implementing and monitoring Net Zero Plan

Achieving a Net-Zero emissions reduction plan is complex as it involves multiple sectors and initiatives. Monitoring its progress requires the integration of numerous datasets, including electricity, waste, water, gas, fleet, solar PVs and many more. Specialised energy and emissions platforms often create data silos within the organisations, hindering scalability and innovation. This contradicts the collaborative effort needed to support Net-Zero initiatives.

Common needs for an effective sustainability platform

Over the years, we have gained extensive experience working with a wide range of sustainability departments. From this experience, we've learned that a flexible and open platform is crucial, as new data continually needs to be incorporated throughout the Net-Zero journey. Our platform is thoughtfully designed to tackle the challenges of collecting and analysing Net-Zero data, including:

  • Comprehensive integration: our platform can centralise water, gas, electricity, solar, fuel, waste, Electric Vehicles and more data as it relates to emission sources and emission reduction initiatives

  • Connectors for all suppliers: Sydney Water, Origin Energy, AGL, Energy Australia, ERM, Weston Energy, Shell Energy, PLUS-ES Smart Metering data just to name a few

  • User-friendly visualisations: Not everyone is a data scientist, so visualisation and insights are crucial for making data accessible and understandable. The platform offers internal dashboards for executives and facility managers, and easy-to-understand public-facing dashboards to report progress to the community.

  • Collaborative solution design: Peclet works closely with clients to design tailored solutions and continuously improve features, ensuring the platform meets evolving needs.

  • Data sharing: The wealth the data collected needs to be shareable - all the data we collect can be exported in multiple formats, consumed via API's or self-service visualisation designed for the non-technical users to perform queries in just a few clicks.

Key Features of the Portal

Peclet's Sustainability Performance Platform provides various data and visualisation tools to help users track and manage their sustainability performance. Key features include:

  • Carbon inventory: Tracks emissions from various sources, offering historical trends and source analysis, including a range of scope 3 emissions.

  • Energy resilience: Manage internal and community solar projects data, as well as gas and electricity usage, including real-time data.

  • Water resilience: Monitor and optimises water usage.

  • Circular materials management: Capture all your landfill data along with Circular Economy initiatives and associated benefits

  • Sustainable mobility: Tracks and manages fuel usage and the installation of electric vehicle charging stations.

  • Multi-period comparison and facility level analysis: Sustainability efforts require long-term commitment, and seeing visible, continuous progress can be truly inspiring. The Multi-period Comparison function brings together multiple datasets, enabling users to intuitively visualise the results of their sustainability work. It also allows to deep dive at individual facility level to quickly identify which facilities are not performing well and require attention.

External Perspectives: Engaging and Educating the Community

In addition to making data available internally, adopting an external perspective is essential for engaging the public and educating customers and residents. By providing transparency and accessibility to sustainability data, organisations can enhance community involvement. For instance, Peclet's collaboration with Casey Council illustrates this approach. Through the Casey's Emissions and Energy Usage dashboard, the public can browse emissions data for various suburbs. Additionally, the dashboard displays the Average Household Emissions for each postcode, thereby raising public awareness and encouraging participation in emission reduction efforts.

Also, the Maitland Community Electricity data story aims at making it easy to understand to the general public what carbon emissions mean and provide a call to action for everyone to reduce their emissions. The dashboards clearly illustrate the decline in residential electricity consumption over the past few years and the positive outlook for solar energy generation in the community.

Similarly, Camden Council also focuses on community engagement for sustainability. The Camden Solar dashboard provides access to historical and live data on solar energy generation on Councils' facilities, showcasing the council's efforts and results in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
